Hoaries - Crudforms Vol. 2 - Album review

Hoaries returns with another recording that's essentially the second half to its first record that was released in July of this year, Crudforms Vol. 1, that was officially released on colored vinyl earlier this month. Once again, Crudforms Vol. 2 is recorded by Britt Robisheaux at Cloudland in Fort Worth, and delivers a seamless continuity between the two records, given how they were recorded in two completely different sessions, months apart. We didn't get the chance to review the first album, as we weren't around at the time, but luckily for us there are so many similarities it makes it easy to kill these two birds with one stone. Just like the first record, we have an uncomfortable, sporadic pace, that leaves the listener feeling awkward, yet intrigued at the same time. It's almost as if the band carries with it a drugged-out, LSD-inspired tone, set by predecessors such as The Jesus Lizard. At times, it's hard to differentiate the sound far from The Jesus Lizard, as if the band just copied the homework, and changed it up a little bit, so to speak. We aren't complaining too much- there surprisingly isn't enough of this breed of music in the DFW area, but the ultra-short records seems like it's holding the band back from developing their own sound. We are definitely eager to hear more from this rather quiet band, who haven't even played their first show yet, to our knowledge. They should work on that.
