Whep - Self-Titled - Album Review

Whep is the newest band featuring Donovan Ford, one of Denton's most prized possessions. Once again, we have someone who's been in too many bands than we care to mention, but most relevant to the topic has to be Bighand/Bigknife, a massively heavy band who slams the fuck out of their out of their songs so hard, with guitar riffs through loud as hell amps, that it leaves most people wondering if they went deaf after the show. While that band had Ford on bass, this band has him on guitar and vocals, and looks to aim for the same goals as BH/BK- and we love it. Recorded at Cloudland in Fort Worth with Britt Robisheaux, this eleven minute EP really gave our speakers a workout. The crunch of the aluminum bass guitar blends perfectly with the heaving drumming by Rhys Johnson, member of another similar act, Born Snapped, and sets the perfect playing field for Donovan. Vocals are definitely an honorable mention, with a style that's not too screamy or difficult to listen to, and some songs reaching into David Yow territory. This band really comes full circle for us as a great record, but, unfortunately we'd never give anything higher than a 9.0 to something so terribly short. We hope Whep can fix this problem in the future with a proper full length.

8.8 out of 10. BEST NEW MUSIC
