Jesse Gage - Loose Morals in Vintage Florals - Album Review

With Jesse Gage, you're almost guaranteed a quality sounding record thanks to the teamwork between him, Britt Robisheaux, and the time they put in together at Cloudland Recording Studio. Gage is like a never-ending stream of music- like a car speeding through the country and only stopping if the wheels fall off. He's in local bands Big Heaven, Movie the Band, and Cameron Smith's act, Sur Duda. He can play guitar, play the drums, sing, and write songs- and seemingly all at the the same time. In fact, that's exactly what he does on his new album that strategically places his butt on the cover, Loose Morals in Vintage Florals. But even with all that talent, the album still comes up short for us. This record almost defines all the criticisms that Dreamy Life Records faces, with a sound that's so incredibly safe, carrying little to no edge, you might give this away as a Christmas present to mom and dad. That is, unless, your parents are cool. The songs are hard to differentiate from each other, aside from some lyrics about getting high in Vancouver and atomic bombs, and are easily forgotten. We wouldn't go so far as to say that this album is contributing to the world being "filled with shitty songs," as Gage sings on the closing song, but it's not exactly album of the year, either.
